Improved safety along the Te Ara o Wairākei pathways

To improve safety along the Te Ara o Wairãkei pathways, Tauranga City Council is upgrading the access points at Hartford Avenue, Pacific View Road, and Santa Monica Drive. Our work includes improving safety at the shared path link with James Henry Avenue by putting in place ways to slow down the speed of the shared path users.

Hartford Avenue

We have completed the major works on Hartford Avenue and our work included:

  • upgrading the Hartford Avenue pathway to a 3m shared pathway, linking it to the existing gravel pathways
  • a new raised pedestrian crossing
  • a gravel footpath connecting the new raised pedestrian crossing to the existing gravel footpath on the Barbara Grove side of Hartford Avenue
  • reducing the width of a section of the existing path to 1.5m and replacing the grass.

Pacific View Road

The planned work has been delayed until late July 2024, weather permitting.

Our works include:

  • widening the trailhead for the Te Ara o Wairākei pathway to accommodate shared path use
  • creating cycle ramps from the road to the trail
  • painting of cyclist and pedestrian shared path markings in reflectorised paint
  • extending the no-stopping lines at the entrance of the cycle ramp.

We do not plan to work on public holidays, but we may work on some Saturdays. We'll be working from Monday to Friday, mostly between 7am and 7pm and expect to complete the work within a month. Some activities might produce noise and dust.

Traffic Management

We will lower the speed limit to 30km/h on part of Pacific View Drive between Tuihana Drive and Grenada Street. Stop/Go traffic management may be in place at times to help with traffic flow and truck loading and uploading. Traffic Management staff will direct pedestrians to either an alternative route around the work area or inform them the pathway is closed. We will keep one of the footpaths open during work to allow pedestrians to travel safely around the work area.

We expect the work will allow your car to access your driveway. You may need to chat with onsite Traffic Management staff and contractors when accessing vehicles other than cars during work, such as boats, trailers, or caravans.

  • painting yellow no-stopping lines at the entrance of the crossing
  • upgrading other road markings at the site
  • upgrading the kerb layout according to the new layout.

Keeping it green

Preserving the green space and beauty of the trees at the sites are important and we are working with an arborist to minimise the impact of the construction on the trees. On Pacific View Road an absorbent surface will be installed at the base of the trees to allow water to drain to the tree roots.

Rubbish Collection

Please continue to take your bin out as normal. The kerbside collection company works with our team to ensure they still empty your bins.

Parking and Cars

We will limit parking spaces at certain times while keeping the road open. Please help us by moving any vehicles parked close to the work area to prevent any staining or damage to vehicles.

Traffic Management – General

Our work schedule may change without notice due to weather or other factors affecting the above dates. We ask that you please follow the instructions of the Traffic Management staff for a smooth and safe experience.
